Metal Processing Services to Improve Wear and Corrosion Resistance

Metal components used in mining, oil and gas, marine and other applications are subjected to harsh conditions that can accelerate corrosion and surface wear.

To resolve issues commonly experienced in severe environmental conditions, processes such as Melonite QPQ are used to:
  • Improve wear resistance
  • Reduce frictional energy losses
  • Enhance corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance, and toughness

Melonite® - Salt Bath Nitriding

Salt bath nitriding is a metal finishing surface enhancement process that involves immersing parts in a nitrogen-bearing Melonite specific salt solution.  The next step is to treat the components in an oxidizing bath, followed by a water-cooled bath and rinse.  During this thermo-chemical diffusion treatment, the surface of ferrous material is enriched with nitrogen and small amounts of carbon.  Melonite processing changes the microstructure of the material surface providing greatly improved wear resistance, excellent corrosion resistance, improved surface fatigue resistance, and frictional properties and creates a black finish that helps reduce drag, increase lubricity, and improve strength and corrosion resistance for long-term durability.

Quench-Polish-Quench (QPQ) Process

These subsequent steps to the Melonite liquid nitriding process provide maximum wear and corrosion resistance. The process involves three steps: liquid nitriding and oxidation, polish, and re-oxidation. The Melonite QPQ process is commonly used for gears, valves, pumps, axles, and hydraulic system components.

Corrosion Resistance

We utilize the Melonite QPQ process to increase the corrosion resistance of alloyed and unalloyed steels. Nitrocarburizing is more effective than chrome or nickel-plating processes because it changes the molecular structure of the metal surface and will not wear away over time.

Wear Resistance

Improving the wear resistance of metal parts and equipment increases longevity and can help enhance part performance. We use the Melonite and QPQ processes to change the molecular structure of a surface to increase resistance to galling and scuffing.

Commercial Paint Stripping and Surface Preparation

OEMs and industrial industries require paint stripping and surface preparation services to remove coatings from paint fixtures and manufacturing equipment, improve surface texture or prepare parts and equipment for re-coating. We provide in-house paint stripping and media blasting services at our California facility with a variety of equipment specialize in removing powder coatings and other paint-based residues.

Metal Paint Stripping

Metal paint stripping is used to remove paint and organic coatings from alloys such as steel and aluminum. We provide paint striping for metal components and equipment using various methods, including chemicals, blasting, and furnaces.

Media Blasting

Media blasting services from Burlington Engineering, Inc. are used to clean and strip, the surface of metal parts. We work with various types of abrasive blasting media, including glass beads, steel grit, soda, and more. Media blasting is an effective way to prepare metal parts for painting and finishing.
